The forsythia branches I cut at the end of December have begun to bloom and the pussy willow branches are starting to have catkins.
I feel cheerier already . . .

We're in the middle of a record-breaking cold spell right now. It's supposed to go down to two degrees below zero (Fahrenheit) tonight. It hasn't been this cold in more than 110 years!
I have a feeling I'll be replacing quite a few plants this spring -- even those that are zone 6 or less, since they may not be well-established enough to survive this bitter cold weather. I'm pretty sure I'll lose most of my roses.
At least my lilacs should be happy . . .
